Southside Johnny

When one thinks of New Jersey rock n’ roll, typically names like Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi come to mind.  However, Southside Johnny Lyon is living proof that there are more rock n’ roll diamonds in the rough of the Garden State that may not shine as bright but are equally polished.  With his heavily seasoned band, the Asbury Jukes (Steve Van Zandt is an ex-member), Southside Johnny has released over fifteen albums spanning four decades and counting.  While he may not have become the household name like his New Jersey contemporaries, Southside Johnny, along with his trusted Jukes, has made reliable, explosive rock n’ roll music, an American treasure that becomes more and more scarce each year.

Southside Rocks. Anyone know know where this was recorded?

Hi Rich. Thanks for commenting. We featured Southside Johnny at the Scottish Rite Auditorium in Collingswood, NJ on April 1, 2010. The episode is complete with performance footage, interview segments, and lots of pictures and history from those Jersey Shore days at the Upstage Club with his friends Bruce Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt. Let us know what you think, and thanks for watching. Lisa Gray/Associate Producer

    Thanks Lisa,

I’ve been a fan of Southside for over 30 years, and everytime he plays nearby, Im there. From the clip I see that local South Jersey guitarist Billy Walton is featured as well.

For anyone who has never seen Southside perform, you’re in for a real treat.

The set list includes a couple of great covers including Walk Away Renee and the Springsteen classic The Fever., as well as some Southside classics like Without Love (great horn line), I Don’t Want to Go Home and of ends with Havin a party.

This one is going on my DVR.

PS When the Fabulous Thunderbirds show scheduled to air?

Hey Rich, I agree that anyone who has never seen Southside Johnny perform is in for a real treat this Thursday at 10pm when they tune in to On Canvas! This band is a talented group of musicians, with driving energy, and vocals as only Johnny can perform. By the way, he told me he has no “official” set list written, instead, he prefers to read the audience, and surprise his band, expecting them to join right in when he calls out the song. Pretty spontaneous I’d say. Thanks for watching On Canvas. Please consider “liking” our Facebook page for continuous updates. That way, when artists you like, such as Fabulous Thunderbirds are scheduled to air, you’ll be the first to know. (not scheduled yet) Thanks again for your interest in On Canvas. Will this be available outside the WHYY viewing area? That was a fantastic show in Collingswood. Jukesfans can read more about it here: http://asburyjukes.net/2011/04/06/the-scottish-rite-of-nearly-spring/

Thank you so much for including the very deserving SSJ in this series. I am a long time fan and go to see a good deal of live music in general. I have never seen a performer that gives more to the audience, never a bad show. The band, regardless of the line up, is always fantastic and on board with wherever John takes it.

Will this be available for online viewing soon?

Thanks for your interest in our Southside Johnny episode of On Canvas! The full episode will be on line today at whyy.org/oncanvas for the rest of the world to see. We will also be posting it on our On Canvas Facebook Page and Twitter. We captured Johnny and the Jukes’ performance on stage at the Scottish Rite which was over two hours long. Johnny also shared many interesting thoughts through our in depth interview. He is the real deal. This band radiates energy, and is always an explosively fun show. We will be re-airing Johnny’s episode this Sunday at 4:30pm. Thanks again for watching On Canvas. Spread the word! Next week: the legendary Wailers!!

Great show. Really captured the experience of a Jukes show, I just wish it longer than 30 minutes.

SSJ … completely underrated. Would buy a ticket to see him and his band before Bruce. Keep rockin’ Johnny.
