North Mississippi Allstars

The North Mississippi Allstars were founded in 1996; a product of a special time for modern Mississippi country blues. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson soaked up the music of their father, Jim Dickinson, and absorbed the North Mississippi Blues legacy while playing and shaking it down at the juke joints with their blues ancestors. Joined up with bassist Chris Chew to form the core of their own band, North Mississippi Allstars. Through the filter of generations of Mississippi Blues men, the Allstars pioneered their own blues-infused rock and roll.

I really didn’t know much about the North Mississippi Allstars until your production. Very nice presentation. I was particularly intrigued about their use of traditional homemade instruments made out of coffee cans and cigar boxes. I don’t think I have ever heard a washboard with so much musical potential. I am now inspired to build a few instruments of my own! I think the show came together well too. I liked the answers the talent provided and the clever mixing of photos and lead in to their songs. Luther really seemed to be relaxed in the interview. I would have liked to have heard from the others in the band too though. Also, just a note to be sure to continue to get good shots of the headstock logos on guitars as musicians really dig seeing what gear the talent is using, especially if a rare piece. At times it seemed a bit rushed but I use my “pause” and “rewind” buttons often to go back and catch stuff that I miss. I am down in Baltimore and can’t get the live WHYY feed so I watch online. Thanks again for producing this wonderful show. I love it! I look forward to more shows in the future that hopefully feature local Philly/South Jersey talent. That would be extra special! Thanks

Aeden, Thank you so much for your wonderful comments and suggestions. One of the goals of On Canvas is to reveal unknown facts about artists that viewers may find interesting and may not have known about. The North Mississippi Allstars played with some really interesting instruments, it’s true, and their back story ties it all together. coming up next week is Raul Midon, a blind guitarist who we caught up to on his world tour. His percussive style of playing guitar and unique mouth trumpet blend with smooth vocals. Thanks again for watching On Canvas! Lisa Gray/Associate Producer/On Canvas
