Indigo Girls
When Amy Ray and Emily Saliers first met in elementary school in Decatur, Georgia, they never planned to be musical legends. Known mostly for their folk rock musicality, flavors of R&B, soul, rock and country also infiltrate. It was their loyal fan base which inspired them to take their talents more seriously than just performing at the local open mikes post high school. After their first release in 1985, this duo’s Grammy Award for “Best Contemporary Folk Album” launched them into the national spotlight. Both avid songwriters, their hits Closer to Fine and Galileo cemented their place in the charts. Besides their success in music, the Indigo Girls are activists for the environment and many other causes. Their vocal blends and songwriting styles are explored in this episode of On Canvas.
