Senior Scientist, Chief Astronomer, Franklin Institute Science Museum
Sky Talk is a weekly discussion of what's new and interesting in astronomy with Dr. Derrick Pitts and WHYY FM's Dave Heller every Monday evening during NewsWorks Tonight at 6 pm. Learn more about Dr. Derrick Pitts »
Derrick Pitts speaks with NASA Technical Manager Rob Landis about what it's like behind the scenes and what's next for the Space Program.
Derrick Pitts takes a closer look at the stainless-steel star made of the original Franklin Institute Fels Planetarium dome, which hitched a ride with the last space shuttle mission.

Alcohol has a much lower freezing temperature than water, and it fdoes expand. There's also a metal called bismuth (not sure on spelling), that actually becomes denser when frozen.
***Sorry
Water expands not alacohol.
water does not shrink when cooled, it in fact expands.
Water does shrink when cooled — until it reaches
its maximum density at a temperature of 4 C. It
then expands as it approaches 0 C freezing point,
and expands even more as it changes states to ice.
