With table games come table cheats

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

When state lawmakers approved table games for Delaware's casinos, they also established the Division of Gaming Enforcement under the Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

Earlier this week, State Police detectives assigned to the division arrested a 31-year-old New Jersey man for "capping" and "pinching" bets at the blackjack tables.  Capping refers to a player who cheats by discretely adding chips to his bet if he is dealt a good hand.  Pinching is the opposite.  A player who cheats by pinching discretely removes chips from his bet if he's dealt a poor hand.

Clifton Shaw

Clifton Shaw of New Jersey is accused of doing both during previous visits to Delaware Park.  Shaw returned to Delaware Park for more gambling on Monday and that's when he was arrested.  Police say he had seven counterfeit $20 bills and two fake New Jersey driver's licenses.

He's facing 17 counts of cheating, seven counts of forgery and two counts of criminal impersonation.
