New trails open at Delaware forest preserve

An area of Sussex County that had been used for years for logging is now home to a group of trails designed to show how forests can be reclaimed.
The Ponders Tract Trails at the Pemberton Forest Preserve is being restored by The Nature Conservancy as part of an effort to increase habitat for migrating birds and other species. Visitors will be able to see portions of the forest that are in various stages of rebirth. One trail takes hikers past the most recently harvested section to show the early stage of regrowth.
The Nature Conservancy's state director Roger Jones says, "Protecting and maintaining Delaware's forests is one of the most important things we can do to conserve our natural heritage."
Visitors can access the trail head in Sussex County off Route 16 near Ellendale.
