DE Governor lifts travel ban in Kent and Sussex counties

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Drivers throughout the State of Delaware are now allowed back on the roads.

Governor Jack Markell lifted the travel restrictions in Kent and Sussex counties as of 6pm Thursday night.  He had previously lifted the travel ban on non-essential personnel in New Castle Count at noon.  The ban remained in place longer in the state's two lower counties because downstate emergency services and local law enforcement had asked for additional time to prepare the roads there.

Governor Markell is still strongly urging drivers to stay off the roads whenever possible, particularly since falling evening temperatures could make roads icier and limited visibility at night requires more caution.

“Our police, rescue and National Guard spent so many hours rescuing motorists who decided to drive out onto dangerous roads and found themselves promptly stuck. They put themselves and our first responders at risk for rescues that did not need to happen. Although the ban is lifted, motorists should remain cautious,” Markell said.

While the travel ban has been lifted, Delaware remains under a state of emergency.
