Summer jobs programs begin in Philadelphia

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Two new programs will give thousands of adults and children work through the summer in Philadelphia.

The Way to Work program is using federal dollars to subsidize jobs in the public and private sectors.  Sallie Glickman of the Workforce Development board says between now and September 30th they have $40 million to pay for 5000 workers, "I do mean now obviously this needs to happen very fast and some of you may be wondering how quickly we can get this together.  We got the go ahead to start this program last Thursday night on day two 12 people were interviewed on day five five people start work."

The jobs are targeted at those who are unemployed.  Eligibility requirements can be found at waytoworkphilly.org.  The Philadelphia Youth Network will manage job opportunities for students.
