Speculators eye properties around Sugarhouse Casino site

The opening of Philadelphia’s first casino is just months away.
City Councilman Darrell Clarke says speculators are already looking at and buying property around the Sugarhouse Casino site in Fishtown, and he’s looking for a more proactive approach to handling development.
Alan Greenberger is the city’s Deputy Mayor for Planning and Development. He says there are a number of ways to approach the subject.
One is through the waterfront master plan we need to identify the sites and the logic stream behind development opportunities that make sense, let’s say in conjunction with the casino. The same is true for other parts of the waterfront where that may or may not be appropriate.
Greenberger says there could be zoning changes as a result of speculation. He adds the city is speaking to property owners in the casino area to find out their intentions.
