Power still not back on as new storm approaches

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Power crews have been working around the clock to restore service to thousands of customers in the region who lost their electricity over the weekend.  Now, some of those crews could have to be pulled off the job as another dangerous storm moves into the area.

The hardest hit areas were along the coast, both in New Jersey and Delaware.  As of midday Tuesday, more than 31,000 Atlantic City Electric customers in Cape May County were still in the dark, mostly from Wildwood to Cape May.  In Delaware, about 1,000 Delmarva Power customers in Sussex County were still without power by mid-Tuesday.  The Delaware Electric Cooperative reports about 1,400 power outages, primarily in Sussex County.  Atlantic City Electric's Sandra May says workers have faced a lot of challenges, including icy conditions, downed tree limbs, and dangerous road conditions.  "We're dealing with all of those challenges, so we appreciate the patience from our customers and our public leaders, and we're continuing to work around the clock to restore power."

While crews will continue working as the next round of snow approaches, May says there will be ongoing discussions once the storm hits to determine when it becomes too dangerous for workers to be out in the elements.
