PA AG: Scammers may solicit Haiti donations

Many people want to donate to help with the disaster cleanup in Haiti. It's an ideal situation for scam artists, who may pose as charitable organizations looking for money.

Big events that bring an outpouring of support are the canvas for scam artists to paint their masterpieces of fraud and deception. Nels Frederiksen, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania State Attorney General's office, says it happens all the time.
Frederiksen: We have no doubt that we will quickly see fake websites, e-mail offers Facebook solicitations from individuals who just want to pocket the money. Certainly you want to give from the heart but make sure that the organization you are dealing with is an organization that is going to do what you want them to do.
Frederiksen says charities collecting money in Pennsylvania have to be registered with the Department of State. Those who are solicited by a scam artist can report incidents to the Attorney General's office by calling 1-800-441-2555.
