Food baskets find needy despite the snow

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Neither rain nor sleet nor gloom of night…nor the roughly two feet of snow that fell in Camden over the weekend could stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. Only they weren’t United States Postal Workers.

Before Christmas every year, volunteers flock to Sacred Hearth Church of Camden to deliver baskets of food to parishoners in need. But when a nor’easter threatened to idle the delivery trucks this year, the drivers were undeterred. Parishoner Ben Hill led one group of volunteers on their deliveries. He says organizers worried it was too dangerous to drive, but…

Hill: We said if people were going to show up, we were going to continue on with the effort and try to get it done… and a lot of people showed up. God bless ‘em, they showed up, and we got it done. Only about 80 baskets didn’t go out of about 1,000.

The director of the outreach effort, Cathy Fox, said 60 to 70 drivers braved the slick and sloshy conditions to get the baskets out before dark Saturday. She called the response a Christmas miracle.
