A one and a half mile section in Trenton is all that remains to complete the trail that runs along the D&R Canal Path from New Brunswick to Frenchtown. Deputy Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner John Watson says a portion of the canal was filled in when Route 1 was constructed many years ago. He says the so-called missing link of the bike path is now being developed there.

Watson: It's just a remarkable resource and if you ever get a chance to go out on the D&R canal in any beautiful weekend you'll see how popular this is for bicyclists and walkers and joggers and canoeists and kayaks and you name it they're there using it.

The construction of the final section of the bike path costs about $400,000 and is being funded with corporate business tax money set aside for public park improvements.

Officials expect it will be completed this winter.
