The 26-unit New Courtland Square in Germantown is meant to transition people from nursing homes into a community setting with support services. Gail Kass is President and CEO of New Courtland. She says the concept follows a national model of all inclusive care for the elderly and uses a special monitoring system to keep track of residents routines.

Kass: If they change their pattern we know it in the central monitoring system. If they usually sleep through the night or they get up three times a night to go to the bathroom and they are out of the bed for such and such a time, we will send someone to the apartment to find out what is going on very quickly.

State officials say the facility costs half of what a traditional nursing home does.
