NJ health officials plan for swine flu

New Jersey public health officials are discussing strategies for dealing with swine flu. One of the topics on the agenda at a meeting in New Brunswick Monday was how schools can plan for a possible renewed outbreak this fall.

State Education Commissioner Lucille Davy says no one is sure how severe the H1N1 virus might be by the time students return to the classroom. If an outbreak does occur in the fall and schools have to close for a while she says they would have several options for making sure students get the required 180 days of instruction.
Davy: What might be that they would shorten the break at the winter break. They might take away a spring vacation. They might take away some other random days where they're closed. They may have days when they do teacher professional development. They might decide to do that differently.
Davy says a meeting between health officials and school superintendents will be held in August to discuss specific plans and guidelines before the school year begins.
