It's most interesting to learn that, after all the fiery rhetoric about how failings of the Bush Administration with regard to science funding, and the need to boost it (by the democrats), it was a republican (Sen. Spector) who actually made it happen. As a biomedical researcher who is dependent on NIH funding, I am delighted at the prospect of new money, but appalled by the way in which it is being implemented. $10 billion dollars is being thrown at the NIH with the goal of "promoting economic recovery", which is not what the NIH is about. In the mad rush to spend this money in a manner consistent with Obama's political agenda, we can only hope that the noble mission of the NIH is not permanently corrupted.

Are we still about to donate $54billion to fund AIDS drugs for Africans?
I wish I could elaborate --via Email-- to your magazine...asking about the status of the confirmation of Dr. Sanja Gupta as Surgeon General? and listing my misgivings.
Thank You Si

Would you like to know more about the stimulus package, and more about the 110th congress's actions on science and engineering related topics? Scientists and Engineers for America has a user friendly wiki style informational tool (which can be found here) where you can find out more information on science in the current congress.
