Pushing for immigrant Dream Act to come true

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Advocates for immigrants are making one last push for the Dream Act before Republicans take control of the House of Representatives next year. The bill would put immigrant students on track for citizenship if they attend college or serve in the military.

House and Senate Democratic leaders say they will use the lame-duck session of Congress to put the bill up for a vote.

Maria Marroquin, an undocumented immigrant from Peru, arrived in the U.S. when she was 13 years old. She recently earned her associate’s degree from Montgomery County Community College, and wants the Dream Act to become law.

“That’s the only way I can continue my education to transfer to a four-year school,” she said. “My dream is to be a lawyer, but I can’t do that until the Dream Act passes.”

The Dream Act is popular among Latino voters, who are credited with helping the Democrats maintain control of the Senate. Both Sen. Arlen Specter and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania support the Dream Act. Sen.-elect Pat Toomey said he doesn’t know enough about the bill to have an opinion.

Illegal aliens students have every right and opportunity to go to college in their home countries. U.S. college students and their families are having enough of a hard time trying to finance tuition…they shouldn’t be made to pay one red cent via their tax dollars and tuition fees to subsidize in-state tuition discounts and/or any federal/state financial aid for illegal aliens. That is completely absurd.

  • 912mom says:

The DREAM ACT is a discriminatory, racist law. It places illegal alien adults up to age 35 in a better position than U.S. citizens and even foreign nationals here legally via valid student visas.
American college students should be outraged that our elected officials like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi as well as Sen. Menendez believe it’s a good idea to grant temporary legal status to illegal aliens AND allow them to compete with U.S. college students and their families for federal and state financial aid including grants, student loans, work-study, scholarships. Foreign nationals on student visas are not eligible to apply via the FAFSA for any such aid…but the DREAM ACT will allow illegal aliens to do so.

Did you know that in both MEXICO and BRAZIL…college tuition at public universities is fREE for their own citizens/nationals?

    STOP the DISCRIMINATORY DREAM ACT!!!!!!

  • Deb says:

The DREAM Act is piecemeal amnesty. It is NOT a bill to legalize the status of illegal aliens who attend college or join the military as touted by its proponents. Read the bill, and you will see that it will also legalize the status of illegal alien students currently enrolled in primary and secondary school, and those with a high school diploma or GED – essentially every illegal between the ages of 12-34. Clearly, the bill is a farce. Otherwise, DREAM advocates would be forthright and admit what it actually entails.

Why would an illegal need to attend college if a high school diploma or GED qualifies one for legalization under the DREAM Act? Why would an illegal even need to complete high school if the DREAM Act qualifies one for legalization simply by virtue of being enrolled in primary or secondary school? Furthermore, how will minors remain in this country without their parents who flagrantly violate our laws? Again, don’t believe the lies, read the bill.

The Election Day results sent a strong message that Americans are fed up with illegal immigrant entitlements. More than 60 Democratic House members and four Democratic senators, most pro-amnesty, were defeated. Those who kept their seats should be nervous about bucking the national trend toward enforcement.

I’m looking forward for Reid to bring the Dream Act, up for a vote. It will not pass BOTH houses of Congress and will give us a road map of who to defeat in 2012.

  • goober says:

Francis, The Dream Act does not allow anybody to bring in family members. Stop spreading lies. The Dream Act WILL pass because it’s the right thing to do. Also, the Pentagon supports it, and they usually get what they want.

    • Deb says:

It is NOT a lie. If the DREAM Act passes, it will legalize the status of illegal aliens, and put them on an accelerated path to citizenship. Within several years, they WILL be eligible to sponsor relatives in their countries of origin. However, their parents and countless other relatives are already here. Are you suggesting they’ll be deported? Please. It’s nothing but backdoor amnesty.

Check out dream act 2010 on Facebook and help us pressure the senate to pass the dream act http://www.facebook.com/DreamAct2010

    • Deb says:

Do you not realize illegal aliens are ineligible to vote? Well, at least they can’t without violating our laws. Do you think the Senate will listen to a group of illegal alien DREAMies who have no vote, or their constituents who have the power to remove them from office?

Wake up folks. They’re playing games with you. They know this bill won’t pass, but Obama and Reid must keep their campaign promise to maintain the support of Hispanic voters. They only have to “attempt” to pass this bill. Then, they can say, “Well, we tried our best.” It’s just the game of politics.

  • Francis says:

    DREAM ACT $$$$$ CONSEQUENCES

Before Senator Harry Reid goes ahead in the imminent Lame Duck session in introducing the obnoxious Dream Act (DE FACTO AMNESTY), or any immigration reform law rewarding people who stole into America. It should remember if the Dream Act passes, this will allow the new legitimized students to bring many more family members into the country under “Chain migration” law. THAT MEANS MILLIONS MORE IMMIGRANTS WILL BE COMING HERE, THAT TAXPAYERS WILL HAVE TO SUPPORT? Asked senile Reid and his Liberal Progressives the cost of yet another Amnesty? Ask Robert Rector of the think-tank Heritage Foundation, as his analysis of amnesty recipients have very low education levels (75 to 85 percent have only a high school diploma or less), they are likely to receive more in government benefits than they pay in taxes through most of their lives. When they reach retirement age, amnesty recipients will impose a large net cost on taxpayers, receiving each year at least $17,000 more per person in benefits than they pay in taxes.

The illegal immigrants granted amnesty under this law are likely to impose a net cost of at least $2.6 trillion on U.S. taxpayers during their retirement years. Policymakers should carefully consider the potential long-term fiscal costs before enacting the amnesty provisions of this bill. One of the largest costs to taxpayers annually is the instant citizenship of babies of illegal parents (Anchor Babies) This number of infants ranges in hundreds of thousands annually that have long term expenditures, in education, health care and other taxpayer public services. Until the real fencing is built (double layer with electrified paired fencing), and stop internal enforcement is not compromised by both parties. Sen. Reid, Pelosi, Barbara Boxer,Napolitano nearly killed E-Verify and such is it is, is only voluntary.

The Tea Party and moderate Conservative, Republicans and Democrats have a must enforce 1986 immigration law and no more funding to Sanctuary Cities as with New York and California. Bombard your Senator and Congressman in Washington, by calling (202)224-3121 In addition; don’t let your State representatives off the hook either?
