Delaware sheriff pleads guilty to DUI

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Kent County’s Sheriff has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Associated Press.

According to his attorney, James Higdon pleaded guilty at the Justice of the Peace Court in Dover. He was fined $500, had his license suspended for two years, and was ordered to complete 16 weeks of instruction on driving and alcohol awareness.

Higdon said in a statement that he was embarrassed and disappointed by his behavior, and wanted to use the incident to change his lifestyle. He said he has filed to run for re-election to the job he has held for nearly 16 years.

According to a summons, Delaware State Police stopped Higdon for running a stop sign south of Dover on May 29. The summons says Higdon’s blood-alcohol content was 0.256, more than three times the legal limit.
