Philadelphia threatens jail for tax deadbeats

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

The city of Philadelphia collected about a third more than it expected from its tax amnesty. Now the city is threatening jail-time for some of those who have not paid up.

Mayor Michael Nutter: “We want our damn money, you owe it, we want it, and I plan to collect it.”

Nutter says the city collected over $40 million and another $20 million for the schools during the 54 day amnesty program, but there is close to $500 million still owed. Revenue Commissioner Keith Richardson says the city will step up its collection efforts.

“We’re working with the District Attorney’s office to prosecute those taxpayers who owe and that can result in up to seven years imprisonment.”

Mayor Nutter adds the city budgeted 30 million dollars from tax amnesty and the additional money will not stave off the cuts he’s announced including closing two fire stations and not replacing about 250 retiring police officers.

“This is not like we just walked outside and found an extra ten million dollars on the street. This is no extra, we need every possible dime we can get.”

I just have one quick question.

If people don’t want to pay their fair share of taxes but want all the entitlements and benefits those taxes pay for, then why do deadbeats live or work in a city that has levied a payroll tax for over 50 years and then complain about?

Is it because liberals aren’t willing to pay the taxes they want to stick everybody else with? Yep, that must be it.

  • Scott says:

Ladies and Gentleman, this is what Fascism looks like. Government is evil and stupid. Tell Mayor Nutter to get over being picked on in school for his name and go get a real job.

  • CMN says:

So when they lock up productive people for not forking over their hard earned money to pay for the unproductive, who will be left to produce?

  • Paul Supporter says:

Major Nutter? For real? Pay money to a major nutter?

  • PhillyTaxDodger says:

You’ll never take me alive, Nutter! Just try to catch me! Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go spend more of my untaxed money on illegal vices.

  • unlapped_dog says:

How on Earth have people like this not been ostracized from civilization yet? They bring absolutely nothing to the table. All they do is go around bullying and threatening people, extorting people, and using their stolen money and power to wreak havoc and chaos in society. It is always such a joke when governments complain about budget shortfalls…these idiots never cut back on anything!!! They have absolutely no concept of money, but to take yours and stick in their pocket through the coercive mechanism of the state. I hope Philadelphians stick this punk in a potato sack and dump him off at the edge of town.

  • B says:

It is times like these that the true nature of government is exposed. A nature little changed from the dark ages.

  • Allbiz says:

The dissenters above are the kind of liberals that have put this country an its cities in the bankrupt stat they are in.

Any responsible, patriotic citizen would be happy to pay a reasonable tax. But you @ssholes want every thing handed to you while giving nothing back. If your boss decided to hold out a little on your paycheck, you’d be the first ones bitching. But you’re also the first to bitch about paying your fair share.

I’m a conservative but I respect and admire Nutter for standing up to you scumbags and living up to the oath he took which is more than the asshat you all support in DC who puts tax cheats on his payroll.

    • Larry says:

      @Allbiz…

Oh, dear Allbiz.. “any responsible, patriotic citizen would be happy to pay a reasonable tax..”

Who will decide what is reasonable?

Any RESPONSIBLE citizen would, through their civil disobedience, PAY NO TAX TO THESE PARASITES, (what makes them different from “protection enforcers”, anyway?), and would protect his own property from predation by this kind of slime, to the point of ending their miserable existence if they aggressed against him.

    • Bill in StL says:

A responsible, patriotic citizen of where, East Germany?

Allbiz, how do you go from “don’t take what’s mine” to “give me every thing?” What I see are people upset about politicians constantly stealing their money to line their own pockets while providing “services” they don’t want.

It’s sad that someone who describes himself as conservative can’t see that. Anyone who wants less government than you is somehow a big-government liberal? Where exactly do the commenters below demand free services? All I see are freedom-loving people who want to be left alone.

Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

    • John says:

I am pretty sure that everyone who responded against the tax here is NOT a liberal.

I (and I assume most people here) are Libertarians. We don’t support violence, whether it’s state-sanctioned or not.

If I took money from ordinary citizens by force but told them I was going to provide them with certiain “services,” it would STILL be illegal and violent. Just because the government does it, doesn’t make it OK. Theft is theft. Stealing is stealing. Violence is violence. A is A.

      • Levon M says:

Violence is supported when it’s used in self defense.
Can you imagine how powerful the state would be if the American people used self defense against police and other forms of government violence?
Currently we do not defend ourselves from government violence except in a politically correct controlled manner.

Since government is sanctioned, self defense is no loner self defense but criminal action against the state.

      my comments in between:
      —————————————
“The dissenters above are the kind of liberals that have put this country an its cities in the bankrupt stat they are in.”
      —————————————
no- libertarians want their money and DO NOT ask the government for anything in return. The fact that the govt creates monopolies and cartels that prevent the market from serving private alternatives notwithstanding. The govt is a thief, holding us at gunpoint (we go to jail if we sufficiently resist paying taxes). That money would be better spent in the non-govt-cartel, non-govt-granted monopoly, free market for all kinds of things, including assistance to those in need, private roads, private defense, private non-employer-based health insurance, etc…
      —————————————
“Any responsible, patriotic citizen would be happy to pay a reasonable tax.”
      —————————————
      taxation=theft, thou shalt not steal
      —————————————
“But you @ssholes want every thing handed to you while giving nothing back. If your boss decided to hold out a little on your paycheck, you’d be the first ones bitching.”
      —————————————
testy testy. I guess all those private philanthropies do nothing. I guess people taking care of their own families and paying tithe to the ministries that help the poor counts for nothing. That those efforts would be hindered by the taxman or a cut in pay would indeed make us a little upset.
      —————————————
“But you’re also the first to bitch about paying your fair share.”
      —————————————
all taxation is theft. when a thief steals from you and promises to use some of the proceeds for public good, it does not make the theft more pleasant. We just celebrated our victory in the revolutionary war, which among other things, was fought over “taxation without representation is tyranny.” We seceded from Britain. We are taxed without representation. We need to secede today.
      —————————————
“I’m a conservative but I respect and admire Nutter”
      —————————————
(this is why we libertarians are not conservative!) conservatives are fond of the constitution and our independence–at least they say– but unfortunately your hamiltonianism is showing.
      —————————————
“for standing up to you scumbags and living up to the oath he took which is more than the asshat you all support in DC who puts tax cheats on his payroll.”
      —————————————
testy testy again. Obama put a tax cheat in the white house. His oath meant nothing to him. if it did, he would cut services before ever raising a penny on taxes. If your son spent every dollar and then some- you would not give him more money- likewise the govt.

I guess these people just don’t realize they are property of the state! They are lucky they get to anything!

  • John says:

    From dictionary.com:

Steal (v) – to take (the property of another or others) without permission or right, esp. secretly or by force: A pickpocket stole his watch.

Why don’t we start calling this what it is?

    Nutter is a thief!

  • Levon M says:

Starve the beast! And have compassion for the ignorant souls who don’t understand Austrian Economics.
This mayor doesn’t serve any customers, his are guaranteed through violence. He holds a heavy stick behind his constituents, and a very shriveled carrot ahead.

Don’t give in! Starve out the parasites!

  • Larry says:

    Hey “Nutter”.

    1) It AIN’T YOUR MONEY, you goddamned thief.
    2) You are not as smart as Al Capone, even if you want to be like him.
    3) It is my fervent hope that NOBODY PAYS A NICKEL IN TAXES TO YOUR FILTHY CITY or ANYBODY ELSE.

STARVE THE BEAST. REFUSE TO BE A SLAVE.

  • Jennifer says:

He really is a “nutter,” isn’t he?

  • Fred R. says:

The Cosa Nostra collected about a third more than it expected from its recent shakedown. Now the mob is threatening “disappearing” for some of those who have not paid up.

Don Michael “The Mayor” Nuttero: “We want our damn money, you owe it, we want it, and I plan to collect it.”

Nuttero says the syndicate collected over $40 million and another $20 million for its associates during the 54 day collection racket, but there is close to $500 million still owed. Consigliere Keith “the Commish” Richardson says the family will step up its collection efforts.

“We’re working with the District Attorney’s office to harass those suckers who owe and that can result in long-term disappearing.”

  • MABass says:

Taxation = the involuntary, non-contractual transfer of real physical property, i.e., THEFT.

As Tom L says, your labor IS owned by the state which makes a person a slave.

Andy Phillyjoe hits it too…the state will come after you and crush your life and your family’s life if you resist the tiniest bit.

  • Andrew says:

Didn’t the colonists secede from England for a lot less than this?

  • Tom L says:

You know, I thought we outlawed debtor’s prisons in this country. Oh right, for private debts. Your labor is owned by the state.

  • I knew it... says:

It was just a matter of time before we started seeing debtor prisons again.

It’s stuff like this that will tee off another revolution. People don’t have the money to pay the onerous taxes…and gov’t will try to squeeze blood from the population of turnips….yay!

I particularly enjoy the indignant attitude of Philly’s thief in chief in his declarations that your money is actually “their” money. I can’t think of a better name for such a man as “Nutter”.

  • phillyjoe says:

i thought the money people earned was their money… odd… i guess imprisoning people, making them lose jobs, houses, and everything else will really help to make sure tax revenues keep flowing…

Where can we muster up troops who would be happy to re-educate our elected officials wanting a career in politics… to serve WE THE PEOPLE.. ??? I hate working paycheck to paycheck but I have never given up on living.
