NJ unemployment rate moves lower, a little

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

New Jersey’s unemployment rate is moving lower, but not by much.

The jobless rate in the Garden State edged down a tenth of a point to 9.7 percent in May and is now equal to the national average.

Employment increased by 76-hundred jobs. State Labor Commissioner Hal Wirths says a decline in private sector jobs was offset by the federal government’s hiring of temporary Census workers.

Wirths:
The Census workers created roughly 12,000 jobs in the state of New Jersey. Obviously they’re going to go away, those jobs, but hopefully we’ll make it up in the private sector.

Wirths says private sector growth will be needed to counter anticipated losses of government jobs in coming months.
