Delay for medical pot in New Jersey?

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Advocacy groups are urging that New Jersey's medical marijuana law take effect without delay.

The law requires the New Jersey Health Department to draft regulations by next month so qualified seriously ill patients can get marijuana legally by October. Governor Christie is seeking a delay in implementing the law because of logistical concerns about who would grow and sell the marijuana.

Assemblyman Reed Gusciora is one of the main sponsors of the legislation. He says there's no reason to extend the timetable.

"The state can improvise. They can look to the experiences of 13 other states."

Jennifer Lande of Medford says she has a number of ailments, and a delay in getting medical marijuana would add to her suffering

"It would mean a lot of pain, not being able to eat, more muscle wasting."

Advocates say they're prepared to go to court if the law is not implemented as scheduled.
