More furloughs for NJ public workers

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Some New Jersey workers will soon be working a little bit less. Camden County officials announced plans to save money by furloughing more than 700 workers.

Camden County workers, who are not in public safety, are expected to be furloughed every other Friday, July through mid-December.

Karl Walko is president of Camden County Council 10, the union that represents hundreds of county employees who will be furloughed.

"We have lots of single mothers, single fathers, they're going to have to decide what gets paid and what doesn't get paid some of 'em may lose cars, lose houses, lose apartments. I've already been told they're going to have to move in with someone else to share expenses."

There will be plenty of other New Jersey workers to share their pain: officials also recently announced plans to furlough all non-uniformed Camden City employees every Friday from June to November. Those furloughs were intended to help deal with a deficit left when Governor Chris Christie reduced state aid.
