NJ hopes cutting red tape will create jobs

Monday, April 19th, 2010

New Jersey’s is looking at eliminating some regulations to stimulate the economy.

The Red Tape Review Commission’s report recommends eliminating unnecessary rules and reducing the time developers wait to get permits. Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno says the 65 page report is the beginning on an ongoing process.

“I am certain that once we get started on this path that we will be able to make New Jersey a home for growth, that we will be able to make New Jersey a place where businesses understand we welcome them.”

But New Jersey Sierra Club director Jeff Tittel says expediting the rulemaking process could weaken environmental protections.

“They’re using the idea of red tape to undermine environmental protection and stop the public from being able to comment on rules and regulations that directly affect their lives and families.”

Some of the proposed changes can be implemented by the executive branch, others will require legislative approval.
