O'Donnell takes aim at Castle in Senate campaign kick-off

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Republican Christine O’Donnell officially launched her campaign for U.S. Senate Wednesday in front of a handful of supporters at the University of Delaware’s Wilmington campus.

O’Donnell, who is described in her campaign website biography as a political commentator and marketing consultant, will face Delaware’s longest-serving U.S. Representative Mike Castle in a September primary.  She wasted no time in going on the offensive against Castle during her campaign announcement.  “Mike Castle is the most liberal Republican in the House.  This is not the year to be a liberal career politician who has consistently voted for the overspending and over-taxation that is bankrupting our country,” said O’Donnell.

Several times during her announcement, O’Donnell stressed the importance of her grassroots support, “This is the year that the people have chosen to take back their party and take back their country, and it’s no different here in Delaware.”  In the weeks and months leading up to her announcement, O’Donnell has been speaking at Tea Party party events in hopes of securing the support of the anti-incumbent wave that’s been seen in other parts of the country.  “I think that the momentum we’ve seen sweeping throughout the country is coming here to Delaware.”

Republican voters will head to the polls on September 14 for the primary.  New Castle County Executive Chris Coons is running on the Democratic side for the seat vacated by Vice President Joe Biden.

A neophyte conservative virgin, who could vote against her.
