Delaware unemployment remains steady

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

The latest numbers from the Delaware Department of Labor show a slight uptick in the number of Delawareans who are looking for work.  The January unemployment rate is 9%, up from an adjusted rate of 8.8% in December.  38,400 Delawareans were looking for work as of January, an increase of nearly 8,000 from January 2009 when 30,900 state residents were unemployed.

More locally, Wilmington maintains its hold on the state's highest unemployment rate, with 13.3% of city workers out of a job.  That's nearly a full percentage point increase from December's unemployment rate of 12.4%.  New Castle County's rate is at 9.3%, just under Kent County's rate of 9.4%.  In Sussex County, the unemployment rate for January stands at 10.7%, up from 9.8% in December.

The national unemployment rate for January was 9.7%, down from 10% in December.
