Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Just a couple of weeks after it seemed like a gay marriage bill would not come up for a vote, it’s now being advanced in the New Jersey legislature.

Senator Ray Lesniak told gay rights supporters outside the State House – the bill has new life.

Lesniak: On Monday in the Judiciary Committee, we’re going to vote on marriage equality.

The bill is expected to go to the full Senate for a vote next Thursday. Steve Goldstein, Executive Director of Garden State Equality, says he’s not certain it will win approval by the full legislature.

Goldstein: We’re counting votes. We’re not there yet in one of the houses but things have changed dramatically in the last 48 hours where the momentum has shifted our way.

Goldstein says the defeat of gay marriage legislation in New York does not signal what will happen in New Jersey which he says is more progressive and friendlier to gay rights.
