Governor Jon Corzine has placed some of the responsibility for the development of Camden New Jersey in new hands. Corzine appointed Albertha Hyche to serve as the city's interim Chief Operating Officer. Hyche is a state Treasury Department administrator with a background in financial management.

Since the state takeover in 2002, Camden has seen a former mayor and a judge step down from the challenging position.

Camden County College history and political science professor John Pesda says Hyche appears to be quite qualified for the job.

Pesda: She has worked in the last couple of years on projects related to Camden municipal government. Her experience in Camden City Hall is invaluable. The fact that she knows all of the players and that she is familiar with the system will make the transition very much smoother than it would have been if someone had been brought in cold.

In a written statement Governor Corzine says Hyche "will provide for a seamless transition until a permanent chief operating officer can be appointed."

State control of the city is set to expire in 20-12.
