NJ taking new steps to deal with Autism

New Jersey has the highest autism rate in the country. And now, the Garden State is taking new steps to deal with the disorder. Health insurers in New Jersey must now provide coverage to screen for autism and other developmental disabilities.

Autistic children, their parents and treatment providers watched as Governor Corzine signed the measure into law.
Anabela Rossi has a 5 year old son with autism and says the speech and behavioral therapies covered by the new law should help
Rossi: I hope it continues to open up his world for communication which is a big issue for him. With independence. All the little things we take for granted but that make him feel successful and able to communicate his needs and wants.
While pleased with the new coverage, autism advocacy groups are pushing for more to be done to help adults with autism.
