NJ lemon law gets an upgrade

The Assembly has given final legislative approval to strengthen New Jersey's "lemon" law. It's now up to Governor Jon Corzine to decide whether to sign the 17-year-old consumer protection measure.
New Jersey residents who purchase a new vehicle with a defect that could not be repaired in three attempts would have lemon law protection for the first 24,000 miles, up from the current 18,000. Flaws that endanger health and safety would have to be corrected in one attempt.
Assemblywoman Mila Jasey says strengthening the lemon law will give consumers peace of mind and may also help the auto industry.
Jasey: It's saying to American car manufacturers that we need cars that give consumers confidence so that we can go out and buy them and help the car manufacturers get back on their feet.
Officials with the Consumer's League of New Jersey say extending the time frame for the vehicle buyer protections will give the Garden State the best lemon law in the nation.
