Philadelphia School District terminates longtime contract with CEP

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Four Philadelphia schools will open this fall under new management, and teachers at those schools are expected to be laid off. The school district has severed its longtime contract with Community Education Partners, which ran three accelerated education schools and one disciplinary school.

Three new contractors, Camelot, OIC, and Delaware Valley, will run the three accelerated schools. The disciplinary school will be operated by the school district itself.

Schools Spokeswoman Lisa Mastoon says the district cancelled its contract with CEP at the end of June. CEP had operated in the city since 2000.

"Every school will be managed by another organization, and families and students have been notified, and we're going to move forward prepared to tackle the school year."

The 74 teachers working at the schools will be laid off, and the new operators will hire staff to replace them. Some could be re-hired by the new operators. Mastoon says students will remain at the schools.
