N.J. will seek federal education funds

Friday, December 18th, 2009

New Jersey's Governor and Governor-elect have agreed to apply for hundreds of millions of dollars in federal education aid.

After some concern about whether the new administration wanted to apply for the funds, Education Commissioner Lucille Davy says there's now agreement to seek up to $400 million in the Race to the Top program. States are competing for billions of dollars in federal stimulus money.

Davy says the money from that program would help expand innovative approaches to teaching.

Davy: I think innovation will be the idea of perhaps preparing teachers a little bit differently, doing some innovative work in low performing schools, perhaps changing the staff or the focus, maybe extending the school day.

Davy says the state is prepared to complete the application for the money by the January 19th deadline, the same day as Chris Christie's inauguration.
