Online Guide helps donors make a difference

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

The holiday season puts many people in the mood to donate. A new free online guide created by the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for High Impact Philanthropy shows donors how they can make a big difference in the lives of people suffering because of the recession.

Katherina Rosqueta is the Executive Director of The Center for High Impact Philanthropy. She says individuals can make a significant difference by giving to emergency food providers, community health centers, and organizations that provide housing counseling.

Rosqueta: Once you get an affordable modification, instead of having the terrible impact of a foreclosure which can for the family can mean a real risk of homelessness, it can mean permanent damage to their credit history. For communities there’s an average loss of home value of $7,200 when a foreclosure happens in a neighborhood where you’re seeing clusters of foreclosures. All of that could be avoided at a cost of as little as $300 given to a non-profit housing counseling agency.

Rosqueta says the guide will likely be most useful to big-check donors because they tend to do more research than small donors do.
