More than half of the 280 non-profit organizations responding to a survey by the Center for Non-Profits say demand for their services has increased since January. At the same time, 61 percent of them say their funding is lower than last year. Czipo: There are some that have cash reserves to draw on but they are pretty modest. So there are adjustments being made but in some cases services aren't being provided.

Czipo says the economy is causing many people and corporations to be more cautious about making donations. The non-profits are trying to make up for the shortfall by recruiting more volunteers.
