Tom Byrne
Tom Byrne has been a fixture covering sports and news in the State of Delaware for nearly 20 years. Byrne is currently a reporter/producer for WHYY's Delaware news operation. He had previously served as sports editor and anchor for WHYY's "Delaware Tonight." He also hosted that program's weekly legal segment, and served as back-up news anchor and reporter for the election night coverage. Byrne joined WHYY as a sports commentator in 1993, before becoming sports anchor and producer for "Delaware Tonight" in August of 1996. Byrne, a Philadelphia native, graduated magna cum laude from Ithaca College in December 1988 after three and a half years at the school. He received a degree in Communications (Broadcast Journalism) with minors in Political Science and Sports Studies. He culminated his career there by calling Ithaca College's 1988 NCAA Division III national championship win in football. From Ithaca, Byrne moved to WNBI-AM/FM in Park Falls, Wisconsin for a brief stint as sports director at those stations. In September of 1990, Byrne returned to the Delaware Valley to become sports editor at WILM Newsradio in Wilmington, Delaware, where he coordinated the station’s sports coverage and anchored weekday morning drive sportscasts until June of 2007. Byrne also served as the play-by-play voice for Delaware State University football from 1994 to 2003. Byrne has been honored by the Delaware Press Association, the Associated Press, the Society of Professional Journalists-Philadelphia and the National Federation of Press Women for his work at WILM, WHYY and as the voice of Delaware State football. He most recently won the Delaware Press Association's 2009 top prize for best presentation by a television anchor. He serves on the Town of Bellefonte Board of Adjustment and previously served on the board of directors of the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association. The 41 year old Philadelphia native lives in Bellefonte, Delaware with his wife Judy and son, Luke.
