Susan Phillips
Susan Phillips covers breaking news and tells stories about the consequences of political decisions on people's every day lives. Susan is a lifelong resident of Philadelphia, which gives her special insight into the city and its people. Her stories have ranged from profiles of murder victims, and stories on the lives of newly arrived Burmese immigrants to the impact of the Iraq war on local National Guard soldiers and their families. Susan's coverage of the 2008 Presidential election resulted in a story on the front page of the New York Times.
Susan has had a varied career that has included publishing, fundraising, and producing programs at a local community radio station. She co-founded Books Through Bars, a books to prisoners program and she has written for The Philadelphia Weekly, The City Paper and Columbia Journalism Review.
Susan began reporting for WHYY in 2004. Her awards include first place for radio news story from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Public Service Award and Best Series from the Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association. A graduate of Columbia School of Journalism, she earned her Bachelor's degree in International Relations from George Washington University. In addition to reporting daily stories for WHYY, Susan files feature stories for National Public Radio and Public Radio International.
