The new director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art says he will continue the course laid by his predecessor. In September Timothy Rub, now director of the Cleveland Museum of Art, will take over the position held for 26 years by the late Anne D'Harnoncourt.

Philadelphia's Art Museum is both shrinking and expanding. Recently it laid off dozens of staff while at the same time moving forward with long-range plans to dramatically increase gallery space. Rub says he will be working to create exhibitions that could potentially travel to other institutions.

Rub: The Philadelphia Museum of Art has an enviable reputation when it comes to special exhibitions. Scholarship, catalogs, bringing great works from around the world to share them. I love special exhibitions, and it's something I look forward to getting back to here.

Rub says that as a museum administrator he has overseen development projects for 10 years. One of his areas of scholarly interest is architecture.
