New Temple art gallery opens

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

The new Temple Gallery at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art is open today. It’s the first show since the art school moved from suburban Elkins Park to the main university campus in North Philadelphia. From WHYY’s Arts and Culture Desk, Alex Schmidt reports.

Temple Gallery, housed in the brand new Tyler School of Art building, is four times the space of the old one.  At 3800 square feet, there are soaring ceilings, oak floors and the ability to shift and reconfigure lighting.

Bassem Yousri is a second year MFA, whose art is among the first pieces on exhibit in the new gallery. He says he believes most Tyler students are pleased with the new school and gallery, but…

Yousri: “I would do the same thing in any space. I like the gallery space, it’s a great space. But you have to interact with the space wherever you go, wherever you show.”

A show of graduating MFA theses will be up for the coming six weeks. The space will also show the work of visiting professional artists and the winner of the newly established Wolgin Prize, the largest art prize in the world.
