The Dead rising again at the Spectrum

Four of the original members of the Grateful Dead are going on tour. Tickets go on sale this morning and WHYY's Tom MacDonald reports on their plans to make a stop at a legendary Philadelphia venue.

Ike Richman of Comcast-Spectacor says The Dead hold a distinctive record at the Spectrum, and will play the venue one final time on May 1st and 2nd.

Richman: "The Spectrum is the only venue the only venue, in which the Grateful Dead have performed in the 60's the 70's the 80's and the 90's and now they will continue that history with two historic performances."

Richman says The Dead also hold a record for most sell-outs at the Spectrum with fifty-three so far.

Richman: "The Spectrum is an incredible venue for so many people it just became the place for the Grateful Dead on the East Coast, and when the Grateful Dead would [play] it wasn't just one show,  three shows at a time whether it was the fall or the spring."

Richman says the Spectrum will be torn down in the fall to make room for a hotel entertainment complex.
