Love is in the air in February

Jennifer J. Wheeler, Manager — WHYY's Children's Service

Love is in the air in February. Amongst cupids' arrows, the chocolates in the heart shaped box, and the valentine's cards, we are reminded about taking the time to love one another. Some children are lucky enough to have a special love in their life, the love of a dog. Dogs give children a special, unconditional love everyday and facilitate so many wonderful life lessons. Emily Elizabeth certainly wouldn't be the same without the adventures, antics, and affection of her dog Clifford.

Clifford, the Big Red Dog became famous of course by author Norman Bridwell. However, WHYY airs the television show at 8:30 am and Clifford's Puppy Days at 3:00 pm weekdays.

DO

If your family already has a dog, you know how much the family dog becomes a part of the family. Walking the dog or throwing a ball or frisbee at a local park is a great way for the family to spend time together and to get exercise.

If your family isn't ready for a pet, there are several things you can do as a family to support the pet population. Most animal shelters have a "Foster a Pet" program. Your family can foster a friendly feline or playful pup while the shelter finds an appropriate home for them. If your home isn't pet friendly, you can "Sponsor a Pet". On the average, it costs approximately $12 dollars a day per animal at a shelter. Fostering or sponsoring a pet is a great alternative to adoption and models to children charity, humanity, and a respect for animals.

Here are some local animal shelters that could use your help:
