Questions, questions, questions; children ask a lot of questions
By Yessenia Z. Garcia-Lebrón, Manager — WHYY's Children's Service
Why is the sky blue? How do birds fly? How long does it take for a tree to grow? Questions, questions, questions; children ask a lot of questions as they begin to explore the world around them. They want to make sense of their surroundings and parents and caregivers are the first to field these natural inquiries. Well, it's a big, big world out there and parents and caregivers may not always now the answer. Not to fear, a new year brings a new PBS series called, It's a Big, Big World aimed at preschoolers. Set in a rain forest, the show takes children on adventures & exploration during this show with various episodes that incorporate science, nature and geography. The show also features new technology, Shadowmation, that has a 3D like quality making it unique and fun for parents and caregivers, as well as children.

DO
Watching the life cycle of a butterfly can teach children about metamorphosis and also how they too, will grow and change. A kit can be purchased online or at a local science or nature store. Watch as you start from a larvae or egg, to a caterpillar. See how the caterpillar creates & stores itself inside a chrysalis & then finally, when ready, the butterfly emerges.
