Clifford Introduces New Friends During Thanksgiving

By Yessenia Z. Garcia-Lebron, Manager - WHYY Children's Services

The leaves are changing colors, the weather is more brisk and families are planning for Thanksgiving and the days children will have off from school. While children love the time away from the hustle and bustle of a school schedule, parents have to plan ahead to fill their children's time with childcare & activities. WHYY will help by featuring Big, Big Friend Day, the day after Thanksgiving. During these episodes familiar characters from Clifford and Dragon Tales will introduce to your children new friends from a new show that will air in January 2006. Pass on the spirit of Thanksgiving with your children as they learn to model what it's like to meet and help new friends.

You can always count on Clifford the Big Red Dog to be a good friend and help others. That's because this educational show for children aged 3 to 7 teaches 10 "Big Ideas" throughout its episodes. One idea that can be shared during Thanksgiving is being a good friend and helping others. The holidays are a great time for parents and caregivers to talk with children about all the richness in their lives which they can be thankful for and how important it is to give back to others who may not be as fortunate.

Tune in weekdays to see Clifford, T-Bone and Cleo on Birdwell Island as they teach and learn "Big" ideas! on WHYY, Channel 12 at 7:30am and 5:00pm.

DO

The holidays are a great time to teach children about helping others and giving back. Working with those who may not have as much provides a really warm, giving feeling that makes you feel good. Perhaps there is an elderly neighbor that lives near you. Or, perhaps there is a nursing home or hospital in your area. Work with your children to make a basket of cheer. This can be easily done without a lot of expense.

What you'll need:

  • Basket
  • Cookie or brownie batter
  • Fun or useful items
  • Helium balloon

Your children can go with you to the store and select fun or useful items to fill a basket. Items can range from books, household items, toiletries, seasonal items or home baked goods. Or, children can take an inventory of items found in their own home that are gently used and can be donated. Take this to an elderly neighbor, hospital or nursing home and surprise someone with a basket of cheer!
