A championship, but does it count?

July 31st, 2008 - by Dan Pohlig

This morning on WHYY 91FM, Elizabeth Fiedler recapped the Philadelphia Soul’s big win in the Arena Bowl with this story:
As the clock ran down during Sunday’s Arena Bowl championship, the people of Philadelphia finally had a chance to celebrate a championship.
“D’orazio runs back, running, throwing…1….0…Take a listen Philadelphia! The Philadelphia Soul are the 2008 [...]

Philadelphia’ Only Piano Company

July 30th, 2008 - by Dan Pohlig

(UPDATE) I would be remiss if I didn’t also include a link to a related but separate story that Alex did about Hugh Sung and his “visual recital.” Just this past Wednesday, Sung played one of these recitals at the Woodmere Museum in Chestnut Hill.  He has been working with software that translates the music [...]

Valley Forge museum opponents get their day

July 28th, 2008 - by Dan Pohlig

The saga continues.
Late last week, Thursday night, opponents of the American Revolution Center, a planned museum and hotel complex slated to be built at Valley Forge National Historical Park, got a chance to voice their opposition to the project.
WHYY’s Alex Schmidt was there and filed a report that I’ll be linking to shortly.
You may remember [...]

Breaking News: Nutter announced head of Office of Arts and Culture

July 18th, 2008 - by Dan Pohlig

WHYY’s Elizabeth Fiedler did a story for this morning’s edition of… uh… Morning Edition about an impending announcement by the Nutter Administration on the new Arts and Culture Tsar.
Well, the announcement has been made and… ok, they’re not calling him a Tsar.  They go with a much less russified title - Chief Cultural Officer.  The [...]

July 8th, 2008 - by Dan Pohlig

The story about Senator Casey securing $45 million (yes, that’s million) for the revitalization of that strip of Fairmount Park between the Zoo and the Mann, Parkside Ave to the south and Montgomery Dr. to the north is all over the news today - including in this story by WHYY’s Peter Crimmins.
I don’t have much [...]

Pennsylvania Dutch… er… German LIVES!

July 7th, 2008 - by Dan Pohlig

I had the hardest time coming up with a headline for this piece, featured today on the Arts and Culture Reports page at WHYY’s website:
Pennsylvania Dutch preserved in new dictionary
This holiday weekend, many people are heading out to Lancaster where some of the last speakers of Pennsylvania Dutch can be heard. Though Pennsylvania Dutch dictionaries [...]

Competition for the ever-popular Chinatown bus?

July 7th, 2008 - by Dan Pohlig

My favorite part of Alex’s piece about the Chinatown bus?
Her description of the bus as smelling like stale mushrooms.
Who knew you could get to New York from Philly or 3 bucks?  And all this time I’ve been forking over 50 bucks for gas, 10 for NJ Turnpike tolls and another 6 for the Lincoln Tunnel.  [...]
