Geo tag survey ranks Philly’s most photographed spots

Monday, August 17th, 2009 at 6:13 pm - by Alan Tu

A new survey of geo-tagged pictures loaded on Flickr shows that Independence Hall/Liberty Bell is the most photographed spot in the city. You might say, Duh, but this kind of survey could become more useful as geo-tagging in digital cameras and cell phones becomes more standard. Imagine the boon this kind of data will be [...]

Why can't historic preservation be more proactive?

Monday, August 17th, 2009 at 2:52 pm - by Guest Commentator

By Carla Zambelli
I have lived out here on the Main Line since I was 11.  I remember, even as a child, several times when La Ronda was in play.
Lower Merion has had more than 30 years at least to save La Ronda if we all want to be honest about it.  (And note that Narberth seems like [...]

Why would someone tear down a perfectly good mansion?

Friday, August 14th, 2009 at 5:47 pm - by Alan Tu

Is there something wrong with this house? Is it haunted?
It has been reported that this big house is going to be torn down so its owners can build their dream home on that spot which is 1030 Mt Pleasant Rd. in Bryn Mawr. (map)
The owners have not responded to an offer by a Florida man [...]

Friday, August 14th, 2009 at 12:21 pm - by Alan Tu

“I’ve had six years of this crap. I’m 66 years old. I was ready to pay up and get on with my life.”
Vince Fumo
The Philadelphia Daily News columnist John Baer recently interviewed Vince Fumo and reports that he’s annoyed as hell about the Feds plan to appeal the 4 years, 7 months sentence handed down [...]

When did the Eagles become Philadelphia’s ex-felon re-entry program?

Friday, August 14th, 2009 at 11:33 am - by Alan Tu

I believe in second chances, but I was thinking something closer to  letting Michael Vick make mud bricks for awhile then get a high paying sports commentator gig. I figured, some team would take a chance on Vick, but somehow I didn’t think it was going to be the Philadelphia Eagles. Vick is the ex-Atlanta [...]

Controversial Cop website Domelights.com now offline

Thursday, August 13th, 2009 at 6:11 pm - by Alan Tu

A website that called itself “The Voice of the Good Guys” has been suspended. I hadn’t looked at this site for a few weeks. The last time was July 21 when the site was still up and running but had blocked all non registered readers from viewing the discussion forums. It’s in the forum area [...]

What did the grand jury hear or see that cleared police in this video beating

Thursday, August 13th, 2009 at 4:52 pm - by Alan Tu

“We found that the design of the force applied by the police was helpful rather than hurtful” Philadelphia Grand Jury Report, June 29, 2009

I recently watched this video again to try to better understand how a Philadelphia grand jury determined that “no excessive force was used” in the May 5, 2008 video taped beating of [...]

Are locally owned businesses better for the community ?

Thursday, August 13th, 2009 at 2:31 pm - by Alan Tu

I was looking at Twitter this afternoon and I saw an interesting story from a Grand Rapids organization Local First that encourages everyone to support their local businesses. My thanks to Urbanbydesign for re-tweeting this and helping bring it to my attention. I haven’t fact-checked every argument Local First makes, but most of the arguments [...]

Poll: Should we let Tony Danza "Teach"?

Thursday, August 13th, 2009 at 1:40 pm - by Alan Tu

Actor Tony Danza wants to film a reality TV show in Philadelphia’s Northeast High School this fall. The idea got a boost yesterday when the city’s Education Secretary Lori Shorr told the School Reform Commission that Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter likes the idea. The SRC says it’ll make its final decision on Wednesday, August 19.

Is gentrification an all or nothing proposition?

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 at 5:16 pm - by Alan Tu

One of the blogs I follow is by Greg Heller an architect urban planner who I just think of as the “Ed Bacon guy.” That was my first encounter with him when he created the Ed Bacon Foundation. I bring this up, because he’s written a thoughtful essay on his blog Urban Direction about why [...]
