Should politicians be required to take lie detector tests?

The new electronic voting machine

Let’s make all elected officer holders take lie detector tests. Whad’ya think Philly?

The idea was proposed yesterday by an influential Republican political consultant who was speaking to a New Jersey Assembly policy committee discussing political corruption. George Dredden says that if all political candidates and elected office holders were required to take lie detector tests it would help the state turn its bad image around. He is quoted on today’s Courier Post article.

“I know it’s out of the box,” said Dredden, who has worked on several political campaigns, including state Sen. Joe Pennacchio’s run for U.S. Senate in 2008. “But we’ve done some things to get us into the box.”

The paper says that In the last decade, more than 130 public officials in the state have been convicted on federal charges.

Do you think anyone in city hall will take this up?

You should ask Zack Stalberg about that… he who famously challenged Frank Rizzo to such a test back in the 70s (which Rizzo failed).

Unfortunatly, polygraphs (”lie detectors”) are not reliable enough to be worth while.
