Gerry Lenfest pledges $300,000 to help save the S.S. United States ocean liner

Thursday, July 30th, 2009 at 2:15 pm - by Alan Tu. Filed under: Community.

Hearing the S.O.S. call from maritime preservationists, Philadelphia philanthropist Gerry Lenfest announced today that he’s willing to give up to $300,000 to help save the mothballed S.S. United States ocean liner. Lenfest plans to use his money as matching funds to help spur current fund raising efforts by SS United States Conservancy.

The big boat has been sitting idle in the Delaware River in South Philadelphia since 1996. It is currently up for sale by Norwegian Cruise Lines for a hefty $20 million.
