Vince Fumo's prison sentence likely to be less than prosecutors hoped for

Friday, July 10th, 2009 at 5:07 pm - by Alan Tu. Filed under: Community.

(fyi: Fumo sentencing scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, 2009 @ 10:00 a.m. Courtroom 14A)

In a pre-sentencing hearing in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia, the judge in the Vince Fumo trial announced that the former state lawmaker faces 11-14 years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines. According to a KYW reports, Judge Ronald Buckwalter said Fumo’s crimes amount to an offense level of 33 which is determine by weighing the crimes with the defendant’s past criminal history. (see chart) Federal prosecutors have been saying for weeks that they believed Fumo qualified for a harsher sentence of anywhere from 21-27 years in jail. The sentencing guidelines are only recommendations to the judge.

Vince Fumo, a former Pennsylvania state Senator from Philadelphia, is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday.

fyi: I found a cool federal sentencing calculator. Check it out here.
