"Steak Tah Cheese" What's That ?

Does anyone know what a “Steak Tah Cheese” is?

Six seconds into this promotion video the announcer says “Steak Tah Cheese.”

Rewind.

He says it again. “Steak Tah Cheese.”

Why I am stuck on this “Steak Tah Cheese” thing? Well, I was watching Mayor Michael Nutter on Fox29 this morning, when the hosts played a clip of a new promotional video for Philadelphia. It has the Mayor blowing a kiss at the end. They showed just the ending of the video.

I thought that was an entertaining clip, and in keeping with Mayor Nutter’s fun-side.  So I went onto the net to see the whole video at Gophila.com.

That’s when I heard the announcer say something that sounded like “Steak Tah Cheese.”  I asked around the newsroom, if anyone had ever heard of a “Steak Tah Cheese. Not a single person. I got a response that some out-of-towners call it a steak and cheese sandwich.

I called over to the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation that created the ad to find out what a “Steak Tah Cheese” is. It’s “Steak Du Cheese” explained Cara Schneider (who used to work at WHYY) and she says it’s meant to be humorous reference to other parts of Philadelphia’s latest “With Love: Philadelphia” promotional campaign. She says, that in some of the print ads, there are appeals that showcase many of the region’s European offerings.

O.K.

It’s Steak Du Cheese like “Soup Du Jour.”

But…

Doesn’t “Soup Du Jour” mean Soup of the Day?

Anyways, I don’t mean to denigrate the efforts by GPTMC because I love this city as much as they do. And I hope the overall campaign works. But without that context, I think “Steak Du Cheese” is better off as a print gag and it may leave a few folks to to wonder “Steak Tah Cheese” What’s That?

Am I crazy? Does the announcer say “Steak Tah Cheese?”

Pardon my French! It’s actually “steak de cheese,” rather than, “du cheese.”

Good point, though, Alan, and we actually are changing that line to “cheesesteak.” Most importantly, you got the main point: we love our region and are working hard to keep tourism churning this summer.

    Au revoir!

ah…Pardon Moi. I stand corrected on the de cheese. so, My reference to Soup du Jour no longer applies.

  3. Cara Schneider

Pas de problem! See you, A.
