The Philadelphia Police Department began yesterday patrolling areas of the city on 10 new Segways.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told KYW that the two-wheel motorized units extend an officer’s capabilities.

“On a Segway, you are able to get down there very, very quickly, so it does extend your ability to patrol very, very significantly.”

The new Segway police unit will be very visible this summer. Ramsey says the Segway will be used to patrol Center City, South Street, Manayunk, Southwest Phila, and University City.  The specially equipped Segways cost about $5000 each and can travel 12 mph.

The Segways were purchased by money provided from the Philadelphia Police Foundation which raised $60,000 for the project.

The photo at the top is not a depiction of a Philadelphia Police officer but from today’s announcement by Nintendo Wii that in the next version of the Wii Fit game it will allow you to ride a Segway. That means the police academy now has an excuse to buy a Wii game system.
