Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 at 8:50 pm - by Matt Campbell

I’ve been checking the election websites of Philadelphia’s surrounding Pennsylvania counties and so far no election reports have been posted. Kudos to the Philadelphia Election Commission for being the first to post results at 8:28 p.m.

Low turnout does not mean unimportant

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 at 6:05 pm - by Matt Campbell

During the off-year elections it’s easy to believe that the races are somehow less important. But truth is the District Attorney of the sixth largest city in America is a big time prosecutor.  Also, imagine being the City Controller and trying to keep a track of the hundreds of millions of dollars that exchange [...]

Delaware Raises the Stakes in the Regional Battle over Casino Customers

Friday, May 15th, 2009 at 5:35 pm - by Matt Campbell

The smell of casino money must be intoxicating for state governments. Every state that adopts a limited form of gambling always finds new reasons to add more ways to bet. In Pennsylvania, Governor Ed Rendell wants to help poor students go to college by letting every bar have video poker. Yesterday, Delaware Governor Jack Markell [...]

City Controller’s Race Worth Watching

Friday, May 15th, 2009 at 4:30 pm - by Matt Campbell

Hey, this City Controller race in Philadelphia is really something to watch. This is the final weekend for the three Democratic candidates to get their message out before Tuesday’s primary election eliminates two of them. I was thinking about how feisty this race has been since watching the Northeast Philadelphia debate last week. Then I [...]

Joe Torsella’s YouTube Exit

Friday, May 15th, 2009 at 1:07 pm - by Matt Campbell

You know we’ve entered the age of YouTube politics when candidates issue major announcements on the popular video sharing site. That’s exactly what Democrat Joe Torsella did last night when he told the world that he’s dropping out of the 2010 U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania.
Torsella was hoping to unseat longtime incumbent Senator Arlen Specter, [...]

What Impact Will Philly’s Higher Taxes Have?

Friday, May 15th, 2009 at 5:30 am - by Matt Campbell

Some of the best minds on local tax policy will gather next week to ponder whether Philadelphia can raise its sales tax rate without also triggering a steep decline in business activity. The timing of this discussion is - right on - because even though the Mayor and City Council have agreed on a budget [...]

Joe Torsella Out of the Senate Race?

Thursday, May 14th, 2009 at 7:40 pm - by Matt Campbell

The good folks over at PA2010.com alerted me to this Politico story that says Joe Torsella plans to pull out of the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania. Here’s what Politico is reporting right now.
Democrat Joe Torsella is dropping out of the Pennsylvania Senate race, according to two well-placed Democratic sources, leaving Sen. Arlen Specter [...]
