Joe Torsella’s YouTube Exit

You know we’ve entered the age of YouTube politics when candidates issue major announcements on the popular video sharing site. That’s exactly what Democrat Joe Torsella did last night when he told the world that he’s dropping out of the 2010 U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania.

Torsella was hoping to unseat longtime incumbent Senator Arlen Specter, who recently and very publicly dropped the Republican party. Specter says he’ll run for re-election by seeking the Democratic nomination next year.

Had Joe Torsella continued his current campaign, he would have had to compete with Specter in the primary. Torsella had been betting on Specter’s defeat in the Republican primary by former Congressman Pat Toomey, whom Torsella felt he could top in the 2010 general election. Although Toomey has strong backing from hard-core Pennsylvania Republicans, it’s believed he would have a harder time winning the statewide race.

Blogs and newspapers already are speculating at who else might jump in to the primary race. I’ll leave that for another post.

So, What do you think? Should Joe T have stayed in? Who would you like to see run for the Democratic nomination?
